Microsoft Security Essentials is now free for small business

When I visit small businesses I often find that computers do not have current antivirus software installed and running correctly.

Whenever someone asks me to take a look at their computer (most often running the XP operating system) the first thing I like to do is to go to start > control panel > Security Center.

I am always amazed how often I find that the computers are not secure with firewall, antivirus, etc.

This is very concerning when you consider the amount and type of malware threats that exist today and the havoc that can result if your computer becomes infected.

And unlike more modern operating systems like Windows 7; XP users typically are running with full administrative privileges (unfortunately) – this allows for an accidental  “drive by” download and install of malware from a malevolent website or email message.

Now for the good news:

There is now a down-loadable security product available directly from Microsoft that is free for small businesses with 10 or fewer PCs.

I am familiar with the product and I have been favorably impressed with it.

It is very easy to download and install – there is even a short “how to install” video on the following Microsoft product download page:

There are also a couple of other short videos on how to perform a scan and what to do if you find a problem:

If you have been running without proper antivirus or other security protection don’t be surprised if Microsoft Security Essentials finds a malware (i.e. virus) on your computer.

Security Essentials will then offer options to deal with the malware (i.e. removal).

This is an excellent free resource from Microsoft for small businesses.

I hope you find this post helpful.

I wish you safe computing.

Thank you
